Ralph Lauren’s ad campaign scandal

by Jenny on October 26, 2009

You have probably followed the story about Ralph Lauren’s scandal where they retouched a photo of Filippa Hamilton to make her waist abnormally small. The campaign photos of the model got critics all over the world talking and newspapers have been writing non-stop about this scandal ever since. It was later discovered that Filippa got fired for being “too fat”, but this was never confirmed by Ralph Lauren. The fashion house finally apologized for their outrageous retouching. Now when the scandal was seemed to be forgotten and forgiven, Ralph Lauren did it again. The blog PhotoshopDisasters.blogspot.com found yet another heavily manipulated photo of the Russian supermodel Valentina Zelyaeva released in Australia. The photo is showing another retouched waist line with the waist actually smaller than the head. Come on, what are they trying to do here? Cause if they want to sell, I don’t think it’s working. Seeing these photos puts me off from buying clothes. What do you think of these photos?

Ralph Lauren’s way of attracting attention. As they say: “there’s no such thing as bad publicity”

There´s nothig to add to this comment, it is absolutely right. … besides maybe that they, I mean Ralph Lauren, are trying to take the piss out of the critics. You know what I mean?

The only problem here is that they dont have a good retoucher. That’s the person who is in charge of retouching all of the photos, I dont know what it’s actually supposed to be called. EVERY company retouches they’re photos, even Sears. Some of them just have stupid people behind the computer.

I am a graphic designer and I have worked in fashion / entertainment related industries… no professional retoucher would make such a mess out of the campaign. Its obvious it was done on purpose. Its all about provoking the audience.

A little off the subject maybe, but a request for people to consider the ethics of buying fashionclothes. Please try and consider, for example, the cloth the clothes are manufactured with, the conditions of the factories where they’re made and the green credentials of the clothes retailer. And try to share, instead of throwing away. Thanks!!!!
