It takes the attention from the clothing themselves (which I think are interesting and very theatrical) and shifts it away from them. I find the same issue with many fashion designers that use "over the top" makeup or hair just to be eccentric and unusual, but many times instead of enhancing the garment it only diverts the attention from the clothing and spoils the total look.
