Michael Kors was born in 1959 in Long Island, New York. He was the son of former model Joan Krystosek Kors. When Michael was 19 he knew that he wanted to work in the fashion industry and he started studying fashion design at The Fashion Institute of Technology. He was responsible for designing and merchandising a collection for the boutique Lothar’s of New York. In 1981 Kors launched his first women’s collection at the prestige retailers Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Lord & Taylor. After this success, in 1997 Kors was named the very first women’s ready-to-wear designer and creative director for the French fashion house Celine. In 1999 Michael Kors received one of the most prestigous awards in the fashion industry, CFDA Award for Womenswear Designer of the Year. In 2002 Kors launched his first menswear line and in 2003 he left Celine to focus on his own brand. Kors meanswear line received great response and in 2003 Kors received the award, Menswear Designer of the Year. Michael Kors went on to expand his business and in 2004 he launched the lines MICHAEL and KORS where Kors designed handbags, shoes, women’s ready-to-wear apparel and jeans. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jennifer Lopez, Heidi Klum, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Garner are just to mention a few celebrities that has worn Michael Kors designs on the red carpet as well as on the movie screen. Kors is involved in numerous charity organizations, he is the Executive Vice President and is on the Board of; The Council of Fashion Designers of America. Michael Kors also currently a judge on the hit series Project Runway with Heidi Klum.
