Betsey Johnson is constantly moving forward with her design. She is known for her sexy, feminine and whimsical style, and she has a love for details. Her unique style has always been considered to be embellished and over the top and she makes her clothes fun and creative. She is known for always doing a cartwheel at the end of her fashion shows.

Betsey Johnson was born in 1942 Wethersfield, Connecticut. She spent her childhood taking a lot of dance classes which inspired her love for costumes, which is something that can be seen in her later designs. After college Johnson studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Later she graduated at Syracuse University. In 1964 Betsey Johnson entered the fashion world by winning Mademoiselle Magazine’s “Guest Editor Contest”. Within a year she was working as a designer at a boutique called Paraphernalia in Soho, Manhattan. Here Johnson’s trademark begin to form, with hippie inspired style with flowy fabrics and sexy silhouettes as well as an incredible fit. In 1968 Betsey Johnson married Velvet Underground star John Cale with whom she later had a daughter with called Lulu (in 1975), they divorced in 1971. During the same year they got married she left Paraphernalia and the year after she opened a store called Betsey Bunki Nini in Manhattan. In the early 1970’s Johnson took control over the label Alley Cat which set trends for the clothing of the 70’s rock with an ethnic and bohemian style. In 1972 she won the Coty Award and in 1978 she started her on fashion line together with Chantal Bacon with the label Betsey Johnson, which allowed Johnson freedom to design with her fullest potential. Later she opened her first retails store in Soho, New York. Today Betsey Johnson has over 45 stores world wide. In 2002 she became part of the Fashion Walk of Fame. In 2003 she expanded her line with lingerie, jeans and shoes and the following year she continued to expand with accessories, handbags and hats.
